Evil Diva

Evil Diva Productions is a small company dedicated to producing unusual Canadian opera and music theatre projects involving Kristin Mueller-Heaslip as a performer and librettist.

Past productions include:

Evil Diva: The Recital
Sometime in August, 2000

The first Evil Diva project – a recital of odds and ends I found in the University of Toronto Music Library (including arias from “Chopin”, an opera based on Chopin’s Nocturnes) and a new piece by Alex Eddington – Eight Poems of Dennis Lee, featuring the Downtown String Quartet.

Starring Kristin Mueller and Brian Harmon, piano.

Death to the Butterfly Dictator!
A monodrama for soprano and ensemble (Alex Eddington/Kristin Mueller)
December 4, 2003, University of Toronto*

The old, sad story – Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. The unnamed main character, a lab butterfly tortured by the evil Dr. Crotch, leads a successful revolt, only to become corrupted by his sudden power and struck down by his followers.

Starring Kristin Mueller as the Butterfly Dictator and Alex Eddington as the Conductor.

*I tried my best to turn this into a for-credit recital when I was at University of Toronto. I was denied, which was probably for the best, but I was allowed to use the hall.

Adieu, Friedrich Lips: A Musicological Comedy
(Alex Eddington/Kristin Mueller)
August 19-29, Edmonton Fringe Festival

In this parody of a lecture-recital, Dr. Cyril Chichester Sinclair expounds on the life and works of 18th century composer, accordion virtuso, and inventor of the G sharp, Friedrich Lips*. He is aided by his colleague, Nicole Burrow, who unwillingly performs Lips’ music, including the horribly embarrassing Liturgical Waltz. Hilarity ensues.

*There is a real Friedrich Lips who is an accordion virtuoso. That’s as far as the resemblance goes.

Evil Diva has been dark for a few years while I’ve pursued other projects, but is reappearing to present Fallen Voices: Three operas for two people, a collaboration between Kristin Mueller-Heaslip and saxophonist Jen Wardle, featuring three new operas by Alex Eddington, Michael Hynes, and Benjamin Mueller-Heaslip.
